Some people love it, others hate it. Despite how you feel about it, it's undeniable that cardio does help to burn aways some extra calories. Just by sitting still, your body will burn calories. Knowing this, it makes sense that if you move your body faster with more intensity, your body wil burn even more calories. So that's how cardio works. Now there are also a bunch of different forms of cardio. Below are some of the main types of cardio and their estimated calories burned per hour [3]: Walking = 300-400 Running = 600 Cycling = 600 Rowing = 840 Swimming = 600 Jumping Rope = 1000+ Depending on the way each form of cardio is performed, it can be categorized into one of two categories: High-Intesity and Steady State cardio. High Intesity cardio, also known as HIIT (high intesity interval training) involves different quick and intese exercises along with very short rest periods to elevate the heart rate and keep it up [4]. An example of HIIT can be sprinting on the tradmill for 30 seconds and then walking at a moderate pace for a minute for a total time of about 20-25 minutes. Stead State cardio, on the the other hand, is much more relaxed. Steady State is mainly used for recovery, especially after days of full-body exercise [2]. This form of cardio is usally quite longer than HIIT as it's not as physically demanding on the body. Steady State cardio can include jogging and swimming at a moderate pace or walking at a fast pace . Now that you know some of the forms of cardio, take your pick.
